GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

WELCOME

Welcome to the Georgia Sports Car Club’s November Road Rally. We hope that you will enjoy the day. If you are new to Rallying, please feel free to ask any of our members questions regarding the event. There will be a meeting for all drivers and navigators at 9:30. The first car out will be at 10:01.

PHILOSOPHY

The object of this rally is to reach various checkpoint locations at the correct time. The correct time is based on either averaging given legal speeds over the distance traveled, or in some cases arriving at the checkpoint within a given fixed time. This is NOT a race. Competitors are reminded that they must share the road with non-rally traffic, and therefore MUST obey all traffic laws at all times.

ODOMETER CALIBRATION SECTION

Because every car’s odometer is different, the first section of the rally will have official mileages in the left margin and will allow competitors to compare their mileage to the official mileages used to calculate the official times. Contestants will have exactly 30.00 minutes to complete this section. At the end of this section contestants will be responsible for starting the timed portion of the rally at the correct time and maintaining the average speeds indicated in the route instructions.

FOLLOWING THE COURSE

This rally will use several different formats. Examples are attached to these General Instructions in an appendix. At each checkpoint you will be given the format and the instructions for the next leg.

The route instructions should be completed in full at the first opportunity to do so, in the order indicated. In order to correctly execute a route instruction, all the conditions set forth in the instruction must be met. (i.e. do not turn at a sideroad if the instruction references a crossroad, or turn right on a road if the instruction calls for a left.) There will never be more that 4 miles between instructions. Unless referenced with an official mileage, all numbered route instructions will take you in a direction you would not have traveled without the instruction.

You will not have a route instruction at every intersection that you encounter. Therefore, at all times during the rally when you are unable to execute a route instruction, you should proceed as straight as possible. You will always have an instruction at T intersections. Some instructions may have an official mileage in the left margin, and must be executed at that mileage

This rally uses paved public roads only. With the exception of the start and end; private roads, driveways, plant entrances, unpaved roads, and roads marked “Dead End”, “No Outlet”, etc., are not used, and should not be considered as opportunities to turn..

The route instructions will also use the term CAST (Change Average Speed To) to tell you where to change your average speed as well as what that average speed should be. The assigned average speeds should always be within legal limits.

Route instructions may also give you the instruction PAUSE. The pause instruction is used to prevent you from losing time at locations along the route where traffic conditions may cause delays, such as at Traffic Lights. Contestants should safely stop for the amount of time indicated.

CHECKPOINTS

This event will use Open checkpoints.marked by a standard white and red checkpoint sign. At checkpoints where contestants are required to average the given legal speeds over the distance traveled (T/S/D format), you will be timed as your front wheels cross a line marked by the checkpoint sign. Contestants should safely pull PAST the sign and then pull AS FAR OFF THE ROAD AS POSSIBLE. At least one member of the crew should walk back to the checkpoint crew and check in. At checkpoints where you are given a fixed time limit to arrive, you will be timed as you approach the checkpoint (on foot) and ask to be timed. At fixed time limit checkpoints, there is no penalty for early arrival.

At each checkpoint you will be given a critique of the leg you have just completed as well as the instructions and format for the next leg, the location of the outmarker; and any other information necessary for the next leg

Approximately 0.1 mile following each open checkpoint there will be an outmarker, usually identified by an orange pylon or referenced sign. Contestants should leave the outmarker at their assigned out time, Any score from a timing error at one checkpoint cannot be reduced or eliminated at subsequent checkpoints. DO NOT BLOCK THE ROAD OR THE OUTMARKER WHILE YOU WAIT FOR YOUR OUT TIME.

SCORING AND PENALTIES

Each 0.01 minute error (early or late) at a checkpoint (T/S/D Format) 1
Each 1.0 minute (late) at a checkpoint (Fixed Time Limit format) 50
Each incorrect answer (at Q&A checkpoint) 20
Maximum Error at a checkpoint 500

APPENDIX: INSTRUCTION FORMAT

Leg 1: Monte Carlo

This is a Time/Speed/Distance format where you are given the assigned average speed, the official mileage, and the exact time to every instruction, including the checkpoint. All times given are time of day based on Car # 0. All you have to do is add your car number. Here’s an example. If you are given a time of 10:38.25 and you are Car # 5, your correct arrival time at that point would be 10:43.25.

All times for T/S/D sections are calculated to the 100th of a minute. The above example is 10 AM, 38 minutes, and 0.25 or ¼ minute. That would be 15 seconds. The instructions will look like this, with conversion to seconds in parenthesis:

Leg 2: Traditional Time/Speed/Distance

Similar to the Monte Carlo, except you are not given the official time, and rarely given the mileage.

Leg 3: Tulip Instructions

This is a Time/Speed/Distance format where you are given drawings of the intersection where you make each turn, instead of written instructions.

Leg 4: Map Instructions

This is a fixed time format. You will have 25 minutes to complete this leg. You will be given a map with your current location and the location of the next checkpoint marked. You must reach the checkpoint by any route you choose, and check in within the time allowed. There is no penalty for early arrival.

Leg 5: Logic Block

This is a Time/Speed/Distance format. You will be given a series of instructions in block format. After you complete an instruction in one block, you may execute ANY instruction that block points to, so you may be looking for 2 or 3 possible instructions at once. You should execute the first one that works. Sample Logic Blocks and an example are below.

You begin by executing the START instruction. It only points to one box, so you must do Instruction A next. Instruction A points to 2 boxes, so after you complete A, you can do EITHER Instruction B or C. You must look for both and take the first one that works . If you execute Instruction B, you should then be looking for three things, Instruction D, Instruction A (YES, A again even though you have already done it), and the Checkpoint. If you should execute Instruction C, you only have 2 things to look for, Instruction B and the Checkpoint. Instruction D can only be executed immediately after B, and must be followed by C. It’s easy once you get the hang of it.

Leg 6: Hare & Hounds Arrows

This is a Time/Speed/Distance format, with NO instructions! Just follow the arrows the rallymasters have posted on telephone poles, stop signs, or other obvious locations. Average speeds (CASTs) are posted on the arrows. This leg also has an automatic 1.0 minute PAUSE at each Traffic Light.

Leg 7: Trap Rally

This is a Traditional T/S/D format with a twist. The route instructions will provide you with an opportunity to either calculate an incorrect time to the checkpoint, OR to go off course (and therefore travel the incorrect distance). The traps are based on correctly applying these General Instructions to the Route instructions. All traps will be looped, so you will arrive at the checkpoint.

Leg 8: Question & Answer

This is a fixed time format, with no penalty for early check in. You will have 25 minutes to complete this leg. In addition to route instructions to get you where you are going, you will be given a list of questions or fill in the blanks to complete before the next checkpoint. You should use the first sign that correctly answers the question or fills in the blank. Even though this is a fixed time format, the route instructions will look like the Traditional T/S/D. The questions will look like this:
